Best Electric Rates Houston

Finding the best electric rates in Houston is no different than anywhere else in Texas, except because of the broad customer base, there is more competition.

You will find brokers competing for your business to find you the best electricity rates for your business or home. These brokers are for the most part knowledgeable and have good intentions.  They stay in business based on how well they do for their clients, and don't want to risk getting a bad reputation.

For those who just can't stand the thought of asking for help (which is free by the way), a few hours calling the various electric providers in the phone book or available online will be a good start. Just be aware that these people are salespeople and do represent the electric provider and not you.

Finding the best electricity rates in Houston shouldn't be too hard with all the competing providers that truly want your business. Just make an informed and careful decision and read the fine print;)

Here are the most common questions about finding the best electricity rates in Houston Texas:

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Who has the best electricity rates in Houston ,TX right now?

    • ANSWER:
There are a couple that are very close to rock bottom in terms of 12 month contracts.

But if you want bigger players that have at least 300,000 customers I would recommend my company. You don't want smaller ones as 3 have already bit the dust this summer alone as Riverway Power was one of the most recent ones.

      My rate is 16.7 cents/kWh 1yr
      16.5 cents/kWh 2 yr
16.9 cents/kWh 1yr GREEN (The lowest as of today)

Remember to read the facts labels. Many companies will charge you a flat rate if you dip below 1000kWh usage and others just charge you a flat /month just for being their customer. Look at the bottom dollar and pick which one. Remember the cheapest isn't always the best company for you. Take for example companies that do NOT invest into customer support which make you wait 30min just so you can find out what your contract is ending. That was a huge headache when I was with Reliant. My company has it all automated and will provide that for you without having to wait in line to speak with someone.

  2. QUESTION:
What's a good electricity company in Houston that offers good rates and services?
I currently have Reliant but I'm wondering if I could get better rates...thanks for the tips. :)

    • ANSWER:
Do not go to Amigo energy. Trust me that company is the worse company around. I switched to them my first 2 months the electricity was about 90.00 1 bedroom apt. Then after that it kept going up the next month 250 then 300 then 450. A one bedroom apartment and electricity 0.00. My mom who lived here first was the one that had signed up with them when they came to the door. I called them and told them what are you thinking charging me that much and they tried to tell me that was right. I looked at all the sign up papers and noticed that my mom didn't even have to give her SS number so I changed it to Reliant and refused to pay them. The highest bill I have had the year and a few months with reliant was about 125 which was last month.

    • ANSWER:
Go to www.powertochoose.org to compare the rates of the different companies. Then pick the cheapest one. Rates are pretty low now so it maybe good to lock in a rate for two year contract. The company you pick is just the company that sends you the bill so pick the lowest one. The company you pick will have nothing to do with the service of you power lines, that is all done by Centerpoint Energy.

Also from my personal experiance if you choose a month to month rate plan or let your long term contract expire then you can get burned. I let my long term contract expire and it autobmatically went to the month to month rate. I payed double my old rate, right in the middle of summer. I had two months of high bills before I was able to get back to a long term contract.

  5. QUESTION:
Is it better to pay a variable rate or fixed rate on electricity in Houston?
I am relocating and have never had to choose an electric provider. Not sure if better or fixed rates are better, and which companies are best.

    • ANSWER:
You write that you are relocating. The summers in Houston can easily average 98º to 102º with very high humidity. That means that your air conditioning bills in the summer will be unbearably high. The winter isn't as bad, because Houston never gets unbearably cold.

The power company determines fixed rates by averaging summer and winter bills. You winter bills will be higher using a fixed rate and your summer bills will be lower compared to a variable rate. The amount you pay over the entire 12 months will be about the same regardless of whether you select a fixed or a variable rate.

I live in Garland, TX (Dallas)
